“"I came to learn how to mentor young people. I left realizing that mentoring begins with understanding myself."”
A Mentor's Journey Begins
The Olasiva Mentor Training in Arusha brought together teachers, parents, faith leaders, and community members with one shared desire—to better understand how to walk alongside young people.
Like many participants, one mentor arrived expecting to learn techniques for guiding young people. Instead, they discovered that effective mentorship begins with understanding ourselves, listening deeply, and building relationships based on trust.
Throughout the sessions, participants explored identity, emotional intelligence, life skills, safeguarding, and the important role that families and communities play in raising responsible young people.
By the end of the training, many mentors shared that they were leaving not only with new knowledge but also with a renewed commitment to create safe spaces where every young person feels seen, heard, and valued.
This journey reminded us that mentorship is not about having all the answers. It is about choosing to walk alongside others with compassion, wisdom, and hope.
